Explained- Farmers’ protest in India

In September 2020, the Government of India passed three farm reform bills which are as follows:-

  1. The Farmers’ Produce Trade And Commerce (Promotion And Facilitation) Bill,

  2. The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill,

  3. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.

Since the bills came out the farmers’ protest against the government started and intensified with time.

Affected areas

  1. Ghazipur border

  2. Tikri border

  3. Singhu border

Farmers of India have been successful to sustain the protest for a prolonged period even when they lost almost 150 lives which is not stopping them at any cost and even when the government has withdrawn services like water,  power, and sanitary facilities. The demand of the protestors is simple they are asking for Minimum Support Price (MSP) or a minimum assured income of their crops.

After almost 5 months Government of India has started dictatorship in India instead of democracy, they have asked Twitter and Facebook to delete a few accounts that are alleged to spread misinformation about the protest.

International celebrities like Rihanna and Greta Thunberg tweeted in support of the farmers which made the whole of India raise their eyebrows and when Gita Gopinath, a US national along with the Indian Monetary Fund (IMF) supported these farm laws and not the protesters’ nobody questioned her.

US embassy on the issue of the farmer’s protest has something to say about it, “we recognize that peaceful protests are a hallmark of any thriving democracy, and note that the Indian Supreme Court has stated the same. We encourage that any differences between the parties be resolved through dialogue. In general, the United States welcomes steps that would improve the efficiency of Indian markets and attract greater private sector investment”.
